What version of the TinyOS Java tools are you using? Packet type 0x42 corresponds to TinyOS 1.1 serial packets. If you're using the TinyOS 2.0 Java tools on the PC side, it'll cause an error like what you're seeing, and simply switching to the TinyOS 1.1 tools should fix it.
