Read and follow:

Read and follow steps 1 to 4 (not 5) to install the appropriate support tools:
http://www.tinyos.net/tinyos-2.x/doc/html/install-tinyos.html

Make sure you have a compatible version of GCC installed as well; the
4.x line has worked good for me. (I think minimum is 3.4 or so.)

If you want to get real fancy you can use 'alien' to convert the 'rpm'
into a 'deb'. I've had better luck just installing the rpm program and
letting it run willy-nilly (but this is due to "incompatible
architectures"). Play special attention to the --prefix option.

Unless there is a very particular reason you need TinyOS 1.x (such as
2.x just isn't compatible with XYZ), I would really recommend
switching to TinyOS 2.x. It is much better.
