You can use whatever noise you want.
I run some idealized simulations with a constant -105 noise floor.
(Just set the noise reading to -105 for all nodes -- make sure you set
it AT LEAST 20 times per node or you will get a SEGV when you try and
build a noise model in TOSSIM).

However, please, please read TOSSIM-Live by Chad Metcalf.
It talks about different ways to configure a "realistic" simulation
environment and collecting link/gain information.

The noise model may also be generated by the USC link/gain generator.
