I suspect the "funneling problem" is coming into play. (Although since
the original message is vague, the rely is more or less a "general
suggestion".) That is, nodes can only send so many packets/data in a
given period of time: the nodes closer to a sink tend to get "clogged
up" trying to handle the data from all the other nodes down the tree.
Another possibility is that adding more nodes increases the amount of
interference. This may be especially true if many nodes are one-hop
neighbors.
