I used to have the same problem with my environment variables, what I did is that I installed XubunTOS over a using VMware workstation. there is a tutorial too in which you can follow, but I installed VM ware workstation instead of server, and everything is working fine for me http://docs.tinyos.net/index.php/Installing_a_XubunTOS_Virtual_Machine_on_VMWare_Server
