We tried using the HighFrequencySampling app with no success. The issue was the the java app that did not seem to connect with Serial Forwarder. The older message pasted below may help. Something that is important to keep in mind is that (AFAIK) the microphone in the crossbow boards does not have an atialising filter, so you may introduce severe distortions. This is a very important issue if you actually want to reproduce the voice or do some type of speech processing. The following knowledgebase solution discuses this for MICA family Motes. http://www.xbow.com/Support/wobjectDetail.aspx?id=50130000000JjONAA0&type=Solution&page=0 The sampling rates should be similar for IRIS as well. You may find the max sampling rate that the hardware is capable of from the respective Atmel datasheets. However, what you can really do in TinyOS depends on your software implementation. Can you tell me where I can check the maximum 250KHz you say (datasheet?) so that I can check the feasibility of a project? Do you know if this is the same max sampling rate for the iris atmega1281?
