For virtual box, have you enabled the feature of having host system usb
available under guest system too?
First test some other device that you know that works(usb mouse/keyboard)
type dmesg in a terminal under xubuntu and you should see the info of that
device.
Then it would be easy to test if it is the tmote that's not working.
