MOS chips use very little power. I've managed to accidentally get them to work them by applying power to I/O pins just like you have done and then wonder why my circuit layout was wonky. Its basically magic, but I wouldn't depend on it...
You shouldn't use 5v, the chips are rated at 3.3v I think.
