CALL FOR RESEARCH SCIENTIST POSITIONS in Wireless Sensor Networks
=========================================== Application Deadline: June 7, 2009 Send to: [email protected] Reference: C2009-RS/EMMON/01 http://www.cister.isep.ipp.pt/jobs/ =========================================== RESPONSABILITIES: ----------------- The successful candidates are expected to coordinate and primarily execute the activities of CISTER in the ARTEMIS funded project EMMON (http://www.artemis-emmon.eu), namely by conducting research on large scale wireless sensor networks’ communication protocols and data aggregation methods. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to develop an independent research program on a sub-set of the above referred strategic research areas with the purpose of providing synergy with and strengthen existing research areas at the CISTER/IPP-HURRAY research unit. They should also be skilled to supervise post-graduate research. REQUIREMENTS: ------------- The candidates should have a PhD in Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering or related fields with a thesis directly related to WSN. Proven expertise in communication protocols (namely IEEE 802.15.4, ZigBee, 6loWPAN) and operating systems (namely TinyOS). Availability to start by July 2009 is highly desirable and will be one of the selection criteria. The candidates should also have had at least 2 years of post-doctoral experience (although this can be relaxed in some very specific cases). Fluency in written and spoken English is required. Availability to travel. SALARY AND BENEFITS: -------------------- This position is for a three year contract. Salary will be 2.650,00€ per month (after taxes) paid 12 times per year. Other benefits include private health insurance, social security and 25 days of paid vacation. The CISTER/IPP-HURRAY research facilities and expertise offer an excellent research environment for leveraging research skills. APPLICATION PROCEDURE: ---------------------- Candidates should send the following by email to [email protected]: - Detailed CV - Motivation letter with availability (expected starting date) - 2-3 recommendation letters (preferred) or contacts that could be used for obtaining recommendation. BACKGROUND: ----------- The CISTER Research Unit focuses its activity in the analysis, design and implementation of real-time and embedded computing systems. The unit is based upon the IPP-HURRAY Research Group (HUgging Real-time and Reliable Architectures for computing sYstems), which was created in 1997, and has since grown to become the most prominent research group of the School of Engineering (ISEP) of the Polytechnic Institute of Porto (IPP), and one of the leading European research groups in the area of real-time computing systems. In 2004, the CISTER/IPP-HURRAY Research Unit was granted the classification of ‘Excellent’ from an international jury. Historically, real-time (RT) computing systems were an important, but narrow, niche of computer systems, consisting mainly of military systems, air traffic control and embedded systems for manufacturing and process control. Meanwhile, the emergence of large-scale distributed systems, enabled by advances in networking technology and miniaturization, has broaden RT concerns into a mainstream enterprise, with clients in a wide variety of industries and academic disciplines. This tendency has been establishing real-time computing technology as a priority for commercial strategy and academic research for the foreseeable future and also for a wider number of applications. The unit’s research work and experiences from applying RT technologies to industrial projects has led us to appreciate the importance of RT computing in the broader area of computing systems. Therefore, in the recent years, the unit has been working on applying this technology to solve different problems, arising from the perspective of more open RT computing systems, with heterogeneous networks and devices, combining RT and non-RT applications. We have been contributing with seminal research works in a number of areas: RT communication networks and protocols; wireless sensor networks (WSN); RT programming paradigms; cooperative computing and QoS-aware applications; scheduling and schedulability analysis (including multiprocessor systems), just to name a few. This is a sufficiently broad spectrum of strategic research topics, which we will keep pursuing in the coming years. The special strategic targets for the coming years, and directly related to these available research positions, are the following: (i) communication paradigms for wireless sensor networks (WSN) and WSN applications; (ii) QoS-aware cooperative computing on networked embedded systems; (iii) multiprocessor / multicore computing systems and (iv) Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS).
