There is not CC2420 low power listening mode as such. When the radio is 
listening, it always consumes the same amount of power (which is, by the 
way, more than for sending). All you can do is adjust the sending power, 
but in reality this has very little effect on the overall power 
consumption of the radio.

To really save energy, you should turn off the radio whenever possible. 
Of course the question then is how to know when you need to turn it on. 
Have a look at the Writing Low Power Applications tutorial, and in 
particular the section on Radio Power Management for a standard approach 
to reduce power consumption.

PS: For low-power listening (LPL) commands to work you will have to 
activate LPL (by default it is not activated). You can do this with a 
line like this in the Makefile:

CFLAGS += "-DLOW_POWER_LISTENING"
