Options: 1) use battery voltage - not linear, or particularly accurate. Depends on battery chemistry. 2) coulomb counting - requires special hardware, but it is very accurate 3) software model - something like what they do in this paper. (http://portal.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=1278979). No hardware changes, but it is only as accurate as your model. If you are harvesting energy you will need hardware support.
