"dmesg | grep /dev/ttyUSB" should filter out most of the noise.

using dmesg dumps in a load of info of the whole system ports ... i cant
make out the result of that command ,, can u suggest anything

Yes, it is a known problem. I use Ubuntu and TinyOS 2.1.0 with an Iris
Mote and motelist doesn't work. However you can use the linux command:
dmesg.
