Just a quick addendum: If you really want to go with object-oriented 
programming, you might want to consider the Sun Spot motes (they can be 
programmed in Java):

The Iris mote also supports Mote Runner. Mote Runner is an interesting 
project where a program written in Java or C# is converted to a special 
binary form that can be executed on a virtual machine running on the 
motes. This basically enables much easier over-the-air (OTA) 
reprogramming and the execution of several programs in parallel. It also 
allows you to use the same programming language for the code on the 
motes as for the code on the back-end.
