Before removing the antenna, you might also want to try to set the 
R-power to 15 (0x0F). According to the data sheet of the Atmel RF230 
(http://www.atmel.com/dyn/resources/prod_documents/doc5131.pdf, pages 
59/60) this is the configuration value for the minimum TX power (-17.2dBm).
