The best suggestion I can offer is going through the TOSSIM tutorial carefully and trying to understand each step and also tutorial on network protocols. Then, you should start reading the code in tos/lib/net/ctp. Once you have a good understanding of TOSSIM and CTP, you should be able to understand the simulation scripts in apps/tests/TestNetwork.
