have to be able to do that.   otherwise, the mote can't tell anything apart
and the packet data all looks like garbage.

Read the tutorials it talks about AM types which is how it is done...   for
Active Messaging.   You may also want to pick up a basic networking
tutorial.   This is very basic  networking stuff.

IPv6 does something similar but is handled different with different packet
formats.
