Siddharth: The easiest way to go is using a pre-built module, that you can just solder on your custom-designed PCB. The IRIS and the micaz are available as an OEM module from MEMSIC. The Zigbit, which has the same MCU and radio as the IRIS, is available from Atmel.
Alternatively, you can build your own boards from proven designs that are free. The EPIC (http://www.cs.berkeley.edu/~prabal/projects/epic/) is a good example of that.
