Printf sits on top of the AM stack

see The TinyOS printf Library
(TOS_2.1.1)<http://docs.tinyos.net/tinywiki/index.php/The_TinyOS_printf_Library_%28TOS_2.1.1%29>

What this means is that the serial port is mulitplexed and multiple
channels exist. One of these channels is for PrintF traffic.

The protocol is a binary protocol and you can't just hook up to the serial
line with hyperterminal and expect to get something understandable.

Rather, understand what the tutorial above is telling you about how it
works and go from there.
