Printf sits on top of the AM stack see The TinyOS printf Library (TOS_2.1.1)<http://docs.tinyos.net/tinywiki/index.php/The_TinyOS_printf_Library_%28TOS_2.1.1%29>
What this means is that the serial port is mulitplexed and multiple channels exist. One of these channels is for PrintF traffic. The protocol is a binary protocol and you can't just hook up to the serial line with hyperterminal and expect to get something understandable.
