You can also use setRFPower(0) that is less than -20 dbm.
Second if you put mica2 at ground level range decrease a lot.
third you can try to use antenne shorter than lamda/4

Subject: [Tinyos-help] Mica2 radio range, setRFPower and related questions

Hi all,

I have recently tried to assess the minimum and maximum ranges of my mica2 motes.

As far as I know there are two ways to modify transmission power of the motes:

1. use the setRFPower Function in CC1000Control
2. define RADIO_XMIT_POWER in the makelocal file.

Maximum ranges seem to be how we expect them to (30m at 0dB). Minimu ranges seem to be to high however. If I set the motes to -20 db I still get ranges in excess of 10 Meters (outdoors, 1m above ground). This seems to be to high.

For my app I would like to restrict the range of the motes to a few meters at most. Is this possible by setting the transmit power or do I have to take extra measures?

What should be a mean range when setting a mote to -20dB?

Thanks in advance

Christian
