I experienced a similar problem with my DELL 24'' 1920x1200 display. XBMC and xrandr only present resolutions up to 1680x1050. The display was running with the pandaboard and android on full resolution.

The resulting screen resolution was only 720×576@50 and xbmc does not offer any further resolutions or refresh rates. The EDID sent by the Yamaha AVR includes many resolutions up to 1080p (verified with SwitchResX on a MacBook).
