I'm going to sound like Michael S. here, but another hypothesis I
had was that the person might be from a culture in which more
direct and confrontational behaviour is socially acceptable or
even encouraged.  My wife is Greek, and as someone with a proper
British background, I find it surprising how abruptly some Greeks
will talk to one another sometimes. Everyone seems to understand
and accept that is how things are done.

I'll try feedback first, perhaps using a style that is as direct
as that being used by the originator.  Does run up against that
unfortunate "do as I say, not as I do" principle, but perhaps
this is a case where cultural responsiveness (if that is indeed
part of the problem) is more psychological gratifying.
