Without any data (that would just complicate things), my guess is that Gibson is correct--we normally look where we are going. Additionally, the direction of our gaze is usually consistent with our locomotor flow line. If we turn our head slightly to look at a target, we will attempt to keep this consistency by turning our body (or the vehicle containing our body) toward the target.
