Well, I do, sort of, "start as I mean to go on" by launching
into a lecture after maybe 10 minutes of preliminary
housekeeping stuff, all of which has to be repeated and
handed out in writing a week later, anyway.
My classes are two 90-min sessions per week, and it's
tough to fit in all the lectures, given we will lose a day for
the midterm and one or two for winter storms. Oh, and
half a day, probably, for fire drill.
A grump -- I must say that I rather resent that teachers are
meant to spend class time fixing up registration lists, giving
general announcements, and sometimes even reshuffling
the classroom furniture. I also take a dim view of the rule
that lets students join my classes up to two weeks after I
have started. (Which ensures that some routinely take
extended vacations.)
The "sort of" part is that I only give one 40 minute lecture
on Day 1, instead of two. I ask if they've had enough, after
the lecture, and so far, they always have, so I let 'em go
early.
