Although many of the texts that we prescribe in South Africa have local
authors, most of these books are still from the USA and Europe. This has
brought some questions to mind:

1. In how many countries in the world is the imperial/non-metric system
(feet, inches, mile, yards; versus the metric system = kilogram, kilometer,
liter) still in use? I know the USA is one. Students find these differences in
their texts confusing and irritating.

2. I know that in many, if not most countries a billion = million million.
However, there are countries such as the USA and France where a billion is
a thousand million. In how many other countries is this the case? I would
appreciate a speedy reply because I have to sign this cheque ...(okay).

Thanks

Dap
