Your question contains the answer. "reflexive reactions" were first studied in dogs -- animal research has provided good analytic tools for explaining how we acquire them. I'll let the psychopharmacologists on the list provide more details, but macaques do provide generalizable data about drug effects. Some general catagories: Relative effectiveness of different drugs as reinforcers. Situation-specific dosage effects (a dose of a narcotic in an unfamiliar situation is much more potent).
