if you want respect for diversity, you should respect white southerners. he may have 
been
southern or appalachian or whatever, but to call him a redneck in this forum makes me
mad. the hat may have offended people, but he does have the right to wear it. unless 
you
have a rule that no hats are allowed in class, it seems unfair to isolate him. my guess
is the students will isolate him on their own without your help. having come from the
ghetto of LA to the bible belt, i have had a head-on culture clash with the students 
here
in kentucky but i have gotten pretty close to them because of the mutual respect we 
show
each other. i have them believing in feminism and liberal politics and all kinds of
things they would have completely resisted if i came in accusing them of
back-ass-ward-ness.
