My thanks to Allen Esterson for clarifying the details of the Fliess incident. Freud wasn't present for the original surgery (as I had mistakenly said), but he was there when the rescuing surgeon had to be called in. And none too happy, apparently.
This exchange gives me the opportunity to ask Allen (and anyone else who may have the answer) about another Freud matter. I've noticed that a rather outrageous quotation attributed to Freud is available at various places on the web, and I wonder whether it's true. It may be too outrageous even for Freud. The quote is: "I have found little that is "good" about human beings on the whole. Most of them are trash, no matter whether they publicly subscribe to this or that ethical doctrine or not at all. That is something that you cannot say aloud or perhaps even think". One site attributes this to "Sigmund Freud (from a letter to Oscar Pfister)". True? And if so, who is Oscar Pfister, and where is this letter? -Stephen ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Stephen Black, Ph.D. tel: (819) 822-9600 ext 2470 Department of Psychology fax: (819) 822-9661 Bishop's University e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Lennoxville, QC J1M 1Z7 Canada Department web page at http://www.ubishops.ca/ccc/div/soc/psy Check out TIPS listserv for teachers of psychology at: http://www.frostburg.edu/dept/psyc/southerly/tips/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ --- You are currently subscribed to tips as: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe send a blank email to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
