I have a simple way of encouraging attendance. I pass around a roll sheet at the start of class and have each student sign next to their printed name. Often I have a short quiz at the end of class. This makes sure that they are present at the beginning and end--nobody slips out after signing or shows up at the break to be present for the weekly quiz.
On the syllabus, I state that they are expected to be present for almost all class sessions. In a once-a-week class, I allow 2 misses (sickness, etc.) and consider adjusting the grade at 3+. The rationale is that class discussion is part of the "participation" requirement and one can't be participating if they are not present. --Dave ---------------------------------------------------------------------- David E.
