Don, an example taken from a realistic situation I use in class. A couple is supposed to have dinner at their mother in law's (his mother). The wife suggests they cancel to go to the movies instead. The husband answers that they cannot do that because the mother will be too sad, and that "children are supposed to please their parents and not disappoint them." Hope this helps. Incidentally, Anna Freud developped the different instances of defense mechanisms.
