You might point out to the student that if the rest of humanity had the
same attitude, instead of looking at a web site in his heated dorm room,
he would have spent his evening freezing his ass off in utter darkness
in a hole in the ground, wondering if he would live through the next
week, and hoping that he wouldn't.

"It amazes me how everyone has to figure out exactly how everything
works and why, how come people can't just be satisfied with the way
things are?"

          My, that certainly seems to indicate a disdain of curiosity. 
I am temped to respond with a brief discussion of the value of
curiosity, from a functionalist (adaptive/evolutionary) perspective. 
Would that be appropriate?  Can any of you suggest a better way to reach
out to students like this?
