If you look at some of the old sign-tracking literature you will see references to 
Pavlov's dogs acting toward a light-bulb CS as if it were food (e.g., biting at it).

In pharmacology, there is an old saying that every drug has at least two effects, the 
one you know about and the one you don't.  A similar statement could be made for any 
learning
situation--there are at least two learned responses, the one you are monitoring and 
the one you are not.

We can't.  Different responses extinguish at different rates.
