Doesn't your instant message contain the id of the sender? Note that a common prank is find a machine where the user has not logged off and send out a slew of offensive messages under that id with the goal of embarassing the sender. So you can't always be sure of who sent the message. In any case, I would attempt to find the individual and let him/her know that such behavior was childish and unacceptable.
