This discussion is rehashing about 50 years of research on external and
internal motivation and reinforcement. The issue for most psychologists is
fairly much resolved. Not so for business leaders who operate from opinion
not research. About every other year a book comes out written for business
leaders that argues one or the other side of the tired old argument: people
are best influenced by external or internal rewards. Business leaders have
very little to contribute to this discussion except their opinion. External
rewards (call them bribes or incentives) result in an initial increase in
the desired behavior. The external incentives or rewards can lead to
behavior that is internally motivated. For example, your parents may have
coerced you into taking piano lessons and practicing. For a small percentage
of indidividuals acquiring the skill of piano playing became intrinsically
motivated (they were good at it and therefore continued) I wish all of us
would remember the basic principles of our discipline.
