I was swayed a bit in this direction a few years ago when we were
cleaning out the library stacks to make certain that the psych holdings were
reasonable. I found a detailed academic book from the 1920s or 30s (I don't
remember which now) about the problem of adolescent involvement in gangs. It
had all of the familiar hand-wringing about the terrible prevalence of gang
membership, the signs, the rivalries, the fights, the territory. The two
notable things that were missing were (1) trafficking in illegal drugs, and
(2) killings by gun.
