Jean- Sounds like a raw deal but I admire your willingness to purchase one
or both for your classes. I don't have any specific suggestions because
there are too many variables (how much detail do you need, how much light is
in the room). What I can tell you is that there are projectors that will
work for many applications starting about $2,000.00 or less (look for model
closeouts etc.). Your best bet is to look at journeyed.com or similar sites
(www.journeyed.com <http://www.journeyed.com> is a site run by Barnes and
Noble- they discount hardware and software for academics). There are others
who give discounts to academics and don't leave out local suppliers. Tell
them your situation- some may have programs for academics and others may be
willing to help. Also try for a package deal with the notebook and
projector. Finally, don't forget to contact your school's purchasing agent
who may have agreements with suppliers. A couple of warnings, do be
especially careful to get enough resolution- if you are just doing
powerpoint etc then VGA resolution is probably enough- If you are doing
analysis of original works, demonstrating experiments, etc. then you may
need compatibility with XGA or High Resolution HDTV standards. The second
major consideration is the amount of light- make sure to get a return
agreement if the projector isn't bright enough for the actual classroom you
teach in. Have you considered sharing this purchase with a department or
other teachers at your insititution? You might also look into working this
into a "professional development" grant at your institution. Good luck with
this. Let us know if you stumble across any really good deals. Tim
