Re. the thumb-sucking itself, I wonder if this isn't just the vestiges
of a social fad. I read a couple of articles several years ago about a trend
among high school students of using pacifiers - yes, out in public, among
their peers. If this kind of behavior was socially acceptable for some high
school students just a few years ago, it wouldn't be that surprising if a
few retained the behavior into their college years.
