I can provide some general pointers but not specific
results.
You might look at the work on Steve Kosslyn on visual imagery
(not hallucination, however). There is some debate about how to
interpret the results and how far they go, but as I recall his data
suggest involvement of V1 in visual imagery.
There are three researchers I know of who do functional imaging
and study schizophrenia: Karen Berman (at NIH), Chris Frith (at
University College London, I think); Karl Friston (also at UCL
although his research focus may be more methodological than
specifically on schizophrenia).
Karen Berman has a postdoc who did a study of ambiguous figure
reversal (in normal adults) and identified brain regions involved with
the switching of the percept. Sorry, I don't remember what they
were but they did not include V1. However, this is not
surprising because fMRI and PET often rely on subtraction of two
different conditions, and the visual stimulation in both conditions
was matched (same figure, only thing that changed was the
percept).
Incidentally, auditory hallucinations are far more common than
visual ones in schizophrenia.

Can anyone here provide me with some information on brain activity during halluncinations. Specifically, what happens in the brain when one experiences visual hallucinations (is there increased activity in the visual cortex and visual association areas)? Also, what structures of the brain are responsible when one smells smoke during a PTSD flashback? Thanks in advance for your help with this.
