In light of some of the recent examples of ridiculous excuses provided by
students I thought I would share an interaction I had with a student this
morning, reminding me that there are still students who are truly dedicated
to acquiring an education for the sake of learning and following the
academic policies we (as faculty) dictate in our syllabi.

A student called me this morning just to let me know that there was a
possibility that she would miss the first exam today or that her cell phone
might ring during the class. She is expecting a very important call from her
lawyer. She continued to explain to me that a few days ago she was in an
automobile accident in which an X-boyfriend purposefully hit her and that
the continued (my interpretation) harassment requires that she go to court
today to file a restraining order. She indicated that these recent
occurrences have made it difficult for her to concentrate, but she never
asked for an extension/make-up exam and was completely willing to come to
class to take the test as long as she didn't have to be in court this
morning and as long as it was ok with me that her cell phone be on during
the exam.

I told her I thought it would be better for her to wait for the call at home
and to schedule a make-up exam when she had written information from her
attorney indicating that she was in court today. She was a bit surprised by
my offer, but very pleased that I was sympathetic to her situation. She
plans to stop by tomorrow with the written proof of her recent problems.

Just thought I'd share!

Cheers,

Rob Flint
