I agree fully with what you have written. My case was not so extreme but
nevertheless difficult. I spent three years during Vietnam between grad
school and the job market. In addition to being primary notification
officer, which meant I told parents their sons were not coming home from
Vietnam, I entered the job market just after all the massive hiring that
took place in the late 60s by the mid 70s there were virtually not jobs. The
present mess disgusts me as well. What is especially irritating and this
does relate to TIPS is that our students are utterly complacent and strongly
in favor of a war with Iraq, after all the war will be fought by
professional military and soldiers of color. Wkhy should our students worry,
they have seen Top Gun and know how wars are fought. To be utterly cynical,
wars will be popular so long as college students are not coming home in body
bags. Is there room in the bucket for my head to soak as well?
