Bill, of course, we are only talking about a sentence here.  However, I ask: Is this type of writing practice acceptable in the field of journalism?  Would you condone this type of writing in your students?  Would _you_ engage in this type of writing professionally?

I'm sure that the University obit was the original. I'm also sure that news releases from institutions are sent out as free copy and anyone is invited to copy and paste as one would see fit without attribution, craving any kind of PR as we do. The obit was probably sent as a news release as well as being published in the Berkeley mag.
