Hi Beth, et al:

[You can skip to the last question at this point as I got carried away--it's
semester break, what can I say?]

I agree that sending them to Jim, or even to contact your local high schools is
a good idea--and doesn't involve postage and can bring good will locally--but
this is good for all those books we are inundated with that we didn't even ask
for from the book sellers.

Sidebar to typical conversation with book rep (BR):

BR: So, I see from your schedule posted on your door that you teach
introductory psychology, research methods and cognition.

ME: Yes, I do.

BR: Well, we at blah-blah publishers have a new edition of our extremely
popular and best selling texts for each of those classes.

ME: That's nice, but I like the texts I am using right now and see no reason to
change.

BR: Well, what else do you teach?

ME: Human memory, and I'd love to get a new text for that, but I've already
seen all of the ones out there and unless you have something published this
week, I don't think you can help me there.

BR: Well, let me see what I have, have you seen so-and-so's book EVERYONE just
raves about it.

ME: Yes, I don't particularly like it for my students. First of all that text
takes a very applied approach which presumes students already know the
fundamentals. There are only 3 of the 11 chapters on the fundamentals. In
addition, I find that text much more geared towards a graduate student than an
undergraduate student and it's hard to tell my students, read page 5 but skip
paragraph 2 and read page 6 but skip paragraph 3, and so on...it just doesn't
work when every few pages things go completely over their heads because they
don't have the appropriate background.

BR: Well, it was nice talking to you, here's my card, etc.

TWO WEEKS LATER:
6 books arrive in the mail--the intro, research methods, cognition AND human
memory books I clearly said I did not want.

AARRGGHH!?!?!?! IS IT ANY WONDER THAT I MIGHT WANT TO SELL THESE TO A BOOK
BUYER JUST OUT OF FRUSTRATION?????? The measly $100 will go a long way in my
budget!

OK, so these latest editions can go to the high school--although they are even
beyond most undergrads, but so be it.

What do we do with books that are way too out of date for us, and are sitting
on our shelves? I dont' like to give those to the high schools.......and I just
hate to burn them....
