This is probably not what you had in mind, but I'd recommend Judith Kleinfeld's 
provocative 1998 essay "The Myth That Schools 
Shortchange Girls: Social Science in the Service of Deception". It's available on-line

(I seem to be having trouble with my browser tonight. For the first url, I was able to 
access only the first part of the essay, and I
