This is probably not what you had in mind, but I'd recommend Judith Kleinfeld's provocative 1998 essay "The Myth That Schools Shortchange Girls: Social Science in the Service of Deception". For the first url, I was able to access only the first part of the essay, and I couldn't access the second at all (which I believe is Kleinfeld's own website). But it may be my problem alone).
