Hi folks,
I changed to a discussion-based format a couple of years
ago, and found the book Discussion as a Way of Teaching very useful. It's
by Stephen Brookfield and Stephen Preskill, has a number of good points to
make about discussion in general, and would be very helpful in a variety of
discussion contexts, including student-led groups. One of the major points
that helped me was that discussion often "isn't pretty"; that is, it isn't
scripted, stops and starts, and, though one can learn to discuss better and
more efficiently, one must sometimes have faith that a different type of
thinking is occurring.

        Best regards,
