The presentation by Gage's doctor does not specifically address whether alcohol was used. It only reads " . . . we proceeded to examine and dress his wound." It does say that the doctors shaved his head and used their fingers to  inspect the wound and remove debris. It is a fascinating question.

I have 2 questions, however I think I will offer them in separate emails.

As we were taling about Phineas Gage, a student asked if the doctors used

alcohol on his brain as they were cleaning it out.  If so, and even if not

so, what effect would alcohol have on the brain cells they came in contact

with?

I had no answer to either question.  Any help will be appreciated.
