Hi tips friends: Maybe this thread provides a good opportunit to quote Penn & Teller: "BULLSHIT!"
I have now watched the first two episodes and I think that for the general person watching showtime the segments are OK, a 3+ on a 1-5 scale. I can't rate it higher because they are not telling people much about HOW to go about critical thinking, the way you are doing in evaluating this neurofeedback information. They are simply pointing out obvious flaws in thinking, especially where $$$ are concerned--although the segment with the snail facial was interesting...... It's clear that if neurofeedback was such a wonderful intervention then EVERYONE would be doing it. I wonder how much it costs? On the other hand, for a not too sophisticated audience on Showtime, maybe the Penn & Teller approach is OK. But in everyday life the snake-oil salesmen are pretty subtle....who would link your example to psychic readings? Penn does like that "F" word A LOT!!!! I'm not usually offended by it, but I think he is reaching my limit for its use. But maybe it gets people to pay attention? I'm not sure. I just think that you are quite correct, if neurofeedback was so great, there would be much more said about it in reputable, referreed journals and if it held up to scientific scrutiny we'd all be doing it.
