As you say, now that you've done it, why do you want students writing a paper that won't count? (Why do you want to grade those papers either!) I think, however, you might be surprised at how many non-A students elect to opt out, take the guaranteed C, and do something else with their time. The morale - think through changes in your grading policy carefully and avoid those "pressure" changes.
