Hello All -

Just a general comment, could we try to not quote the original message when responding - it often makes reading the responses in digest form confusing.

Also, perhaps I could weigh in on the 'Random Thoughts' thread. First, I think there is an enormous over reaction and a certain amount of disingenuous criticism directed against the author. He is not claiming to post scientific data nor even carefully reasoned argument, he states that he is posting random thoughts. So I find much of the criticism unjustified. Be that as it may, I also find many of his postings pedantic, self indulgent and useless. Maybe there are those of us who never, even casually, consider our role as professor. But I suspect those who fall into that camp would never find, let alone subscribe to, this list. Those of us who do consider our role and read and take counsel with our colleagues concerning teaching are a different matter. I personally find these 'random thoughts' of little use and often find them an annoying waste of space on this list. However, it is an open list and so Louis has the right to post as we all do. But I would implore you, Louis, to go beyond random thoughts and apply the same intellectual rigor that many of us expect from our colleagues, or at least the rigor we expect from our students.

Aloha Cf
