Tipsfriends,
The latest issue of Harper's has an article by John Gatto, a former NYC teacher of the year, which is a serious indictment of American public education. He raises some points that I have been pondering out loud for a few months now regarding the general propensity for mass public education to create boredom and stifle creativity. He suggests, at least indirectly, that compulsory education may not be necessary for an educated populace. I am pretty sure I agree with him about this.
Before anyone accuses me of raising the "insensitive teacher" spectre, I read it primarily as directed at the system of mass education and its possible roots in civil indoctrination rather than civil enlightenment. I suspect that for the most part he sees the teachers as more oppressed than oppressive.
Anyway, if any of you read this article, I would love to read your thoughts. I found it cogent and troubling.
