Is your student convinced that the math manipulation is necessary to elicit carrot responses? Or perhaps this is the point of your student's research? If the mysterious math manipulation is immaterial, perhaps it's just a variant of the famous (or obscure, take your pick) "blue-seven" phenomenon.
