An example of how the media is manipulating the military image is the
release (or lack there of) of a movie based on a book written by a friend of
mine. The book is Buffalo Soldiers (not the story of African American
soldiers during the 19th century). The story takes place in Germany after
the fall of the Berlin wall. It was not a very flattering portrayal of
American Soldiers. The book received critical acclaim and was made into a
(relatively) big budget movie starring Joaquin Phoenix, Anna Paquin, Ed
Harris, Scott Glenn, and Dean Stockwell. The movie premiered at the Toronto
Film Festival two years ago and was picked up by Miramax for release. The
second showing of the movie happened to be the morning of 9/11. (Tragically,
my friend's daughter was on the 93rd floor of the south WTC). Miramax
immediately postponed the holiday release. It was rescheduled 3 - 4 times
including last spring when it was postponed after we invaded Iraq. This
summer there was limited release in NY and LA and more widespread release in
Europe. Miramax is concerned about the reaction to a negative portrayal of
the military in the movie.

It's not the NY Times but there is a discussion of bind Miramax is in is at

All of us who are concerned for peace and triumph of reason and justice
must be keenly aware how small an influence reason and honest good will
exert upon events in the political field.
